The Kailasanatha temple was built in the Samarth tradition to worship Lord Shiva, Vishnu, Devi, Surya, Ganesha and Kartikeya.

The Pallava dynasty established its kingdom at Kanchipuram which came to be known as Kanchi or Shiva Vishnu Kanchi. Many temples were built by Emperor Narasimhavarman (First), of which Tiru Parameswara Vinnagaram and Kanchi Kailasanathar Temple are the most attractive. This temple is the first structural temple built in South India by Narasimhavarman (First), also known as Rajasimha Pallaveswaram. Later his son Mahendravarman III completed the construction of the front of the temple and the tower.

Kanchi Kailashnath Temple is a very ancient temple in Tamil Nadu and is the oldest among the temples which were built during 685 AD and 705 AD. The construction of this attractive temple was started by the Pallava ruler Rajasimha and completed by his son Mahendra Varma Pallava. The Kanchi Kailashnath Temple is a classic example of the Dravidian style of architecture, carved out of sandstone. Nagaswamy believes that Kailashnath is probably the only temple in South India in which pieces of stone have been built by joining together. The base of the temple is made of granite and the temple is made of sandstone. There are 8 pilgrimage areas on the wall built at the entrance of the temple. Two of these are on the left side of the entrance while 6 are on the right. The vimana is built in Dravidian architecture over the sanctum sanctorum. A wonderful and huge Shivling made of granite is installed in the sanctum sanctorum. The walls around the sanctum sanctorum are carved with forms of Lord Shiva like Lingodbhava, Urdhva Tandavamurti, Tripurantaka and Harihara. Apart from various gods and goddesses, the sculptures of Singh (lion) are prominently depicted on the pillars of the temple.

By the way, this temple dedicated to Lord Shiva sees a sizeable crowd of Hindus on Mondays, Shravan month and Mahashivaratri. Along with this, a fair of devotees is held here during many other festivals, but apart from the spiritual perspective, people with art and archaeological interest also visit this temple.
