Chamundeshwari Temple is a major religious place of Hindus located in the Chamundi Hills of Karnataka state. This temple is dedicated to Chamundeshwari. Chamundeshwari temple is also considered as Shaktipeeth because the hair of Goddess Sati fell here.

Sri Chamundeshwari Temple is located at a distance of 12 kilometers from the famous Mysore city of Karnataka. This temple, which is more than 1000 years old, is dedicated to the Chamunda form of Goddess Durga. Mother Durga had taken this form to free the gods from the tyranny of the powerful demon Mahishasura. According to mythological beliefs, the Chamundi hill on which this temple is situated was the place where Mother Chamunda had killed Mahishasura. Apart from this, this pilgrimage place is considered one of the 18 Mahashakti Peethas.

Chamundeshwari Temple Mysore History

The name of Chamunda or Chamundeshwari is found in the stories of the goddess which are part of the Devi Mahatmaya or Durga Saptashati under the Markandeya Purana. In this scripture, Maa Durga incarnates in various forms to kill various demons that appear from time to time. The form of the goddess in which she killed two demon brothers named Chand and Mund is called Chamunda.

Mata Chamunda, who is featured prominently in Devi Mahatmya, is the main deity of this age-old temple. This divine region is described in the Devi Purana and Skanda Purana. According to the Puranas, when Mahishasura received a boon from Brahmaji’s penance, he started torturing the gods.

Brahmaji had given a boon to Mahishasura that his death would happen only through a woman. Knowing this, all the gods reached Mother Durga and asked her for the solution to this problem. Then Mother Durga took the form of Chamunda to kill Mahishasura. After this, a terrible battle took place between Mata Chamunda and Mahishasura at this place and ultimately Mata Chamunda killed the demon.

Apart from this, this area is considered one of the 18 Mahashakti Peethas. Shaktipeeths were established wherever the body parts of Goddess Sati fell. According to different beliefs, their number is 51 or 52 but out of these, 18 Shaktipeeths are called Mahashakti Peethas. These are considered goddess places of utmost importance. One of these is Chamundeshwari Temple, where the hair of Mata Sati had fallen. In mythological times, this area was also known as Kraunch Puri, due to which this place is also called Kraunch Peetham.

Mysore Chamundeshwari Temple Architecture

Sri Chamundeshwari Temple was built in the 12th century by the Hoysala dynasty rulers. After this, this temple was continuously renovated by the rulers of Vijayanagara Empire. The seven-storey gopura of the temple was also built by the Vijayanagara rulers during the 17th century.

Mata Chamundeshwari is considered to be the family deity of the Maharajas of Mysore, which is why the Maharajas of Mysore have made many contributions to the temple. Krishnaraja Wodeyar (Third) rebuilt this temple during 1827. Wodeyar, a staunch devotee of Goddess Durga, had offered lion vehicles, chariots and precious gems to the temple.

The temple is constructed in Dravidian architectural style. A large statue of Mahishasura is installed even before entering the temple. In which the demon has a sword in one hand and a huge snake in the other hand. Apart from this, a huge statue of Nandi has been installed on the way up the stairs to the temple. This 15 feet high Nandi has been constructed from a single stone. Navaranga Hall, Antarala Mandapam and Praparaka are the major parts of the temple. A Vimana has been constructed on the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, on top of which 7 golden Kalash are installed.

As soon as you enter the temple, there is Navrang Mandap and Antaral Mandap in front of which is the sanctum sanctorum. There are walls around the temple called Prakaras.

Ganesh, Hanuman and Bhairav Temple-

The temple complex has some small temples dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Hanumanji and Bhairava. To protect the main gate, there are gatekeepers on both sides whose names are Nandini and Kamalini. Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar III of Mysore and his wives Ramavilasa, Lakshmivilasa and Krishnavilasa are also present at the temple as devotees.

The main idol of the goddess is installed in Ashtabhuja form. The image of this goddess with eight arms is the same as described in the Markandeya Purana. It is believed that perhaps Sage Markandeya was the first to anoint this idol. Shri Chakra, the geometric form of the goddess, is also worshiped here.

There are many small shops around the temple that sell flowers and other puja materials. Laddus are offered as the main offering in the temple. Under the stable trees in the complex, I saw several snake statues which are common in South India.

Mahabaleshwar Temple-

There is a small Shiva temple made of rocks at a distance of about 100 meters from the Chamundeshwari temple. Its pillars are made in the typical Hoysala temple style, which suggests that this temple might have been built by the Hoysala dynasty. This temple complex has an inscription inscribed in Kannada language.

This temple may be older than the Chamundeshwari temple and other contemporary temples. The name of the hill on which this temple is situated is Mahabaladri Hill. With time, Chamundi Hill became more popular. There is also Narayanaswami temple nearby.

Nandi idol and Shiva Temple-

Climbing the thousands of steps that climb Chamundi Hill, when you reach the 700th step, you will see a huge statue of Nandi carved out of rock. This statue of Nandi has been carved from a single huge stone. In this, various components of Nandi are made in very proper, shapely and precise proportions. We know that Nandi is very popular in this area. Sometimes the idol of Nandi is made bigger than Shivalinga. No matter by which means the devotees are going to Chamundeshwari temple, they definitely stop here on the way and have darshan of Nandi.

The statue of Nandi is about 16 feet high and about 25 feet long. Seeing one’s size in front of it, one realizes the subtlety of one’s existence in front of Nandi and God. There are many earrings and bells around the neck of Nandi which also cover the entire back of Nandi. This Nandi is very dear to the tourists. It was also constructed by Dodda Devraj, who constructed stairs for the convenience of pilgrims.

Statue Of Mahishasura –

On the top of the hill there is a huge statue of Mahishasura with a sword and a snake in his hands. The idol of Mahishasura symbolizes the victory of good over evil. It also symbolizes that when unrighteousness on earth increased beyond limits, the gods had to incarnate on earth.

Chamundi Hill is not only famous for the Chamundeshwari Temple, this hill is also famous for morning and evening walks, enjoying the sunrise and sunset views and clicking photographs, immersing yourself in the pleasant atmosphere and seeing the lush green landscape. It is also very popular in India.

An amazing panoramic view of Mysore city is visible from the top of Chamundi hill. I observed Mysore city from several observation points on this hill. From there, Mysuru city seemed like a white city to me as many prominent buildings in Mysuru are white in colour.

Jwalamalini and Tripurasundari Temple-

While coming down Chamundi hill, turn towards Uttanahalli village. This village is situated almost at the foot of the main hill. There are two temples dedicated to twin goddesses, Jwalamalini and Tripurasundari. It is believed that both these goddesses are sisters of Goddess Chamunda.

These two temples are together. There is also a beautiful Shiva temple in this complex. I also saw some rock sculptures of Bhairava here which are considered an important part of any Devi Kshetra. It is said that before going to war, the kings and emperors used to come to this temple to have darshan of the goddess and seek her blessings.

Famous Festival of Chamundeshwari Temple

This is a goddess temple. So it is natural that Friday will be special for the temple. On Friday, a large number of devotees come to the temple to have darshan of the goddess and take prasad.

Ashadh Friday:

A special festival is organized in the temple on Friday of the month of Ashadha. According to the English calendar, the month of Ashadha falls in July-August.

Chamundi Jayanti:

Chamundi Jayanti is celebrated on Krishna Saptami day of Ashadha month. On this day the Goddess comes out of the temple in her festive idol form sitting in her golden palanquin. His procession is taken out in the temple premises.

Members of the royal family of Mysore also participate in this puja and seek blessings from the goddess to rule the state impartially under her guidance.

Navratri and Nada Habba or Dussehra:

Navratri comes twice a year in Chaitra month and Ashwin month. Like other goddess temples across the country, both these Navratri are celebrated with great pomp in this temple also. The goddess is decorated in different forms, called Navadurga, during the nine days of Navratri in the Chamundeshwari temple. During some of these days, the goddess is also decorated with jewellery brought from the treasury of Mysore.
